Reply to your question, Bunking_off, the modem was installed by NTL. The line is from NTL. NTL connected a line to a small box that they fixed on the wall and from there with a fairly thick cable to their modem. So, as far as I understand this wireless technology I will only need a wireless router without a modem. I have seen on Amazon a second hand Netgear MR 814 for £18.95. Is this a good buy, or shall I keep away from second hand equipment?

Wouldn't necessarily have an issue with second hand, but if it was my money I'd probably go for Scoobydo's suggestion....evidence that a particular combination works is always worth a few quid's worth of re-assurance in my book!
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

Got a KCorp KLG575 and Draytek Vigor 2600 myself. Couldn't fault either of them. The Draytek is a bit pricey though, probably more than you need.

    Hi Alison ( Scoobydo)
I bought the same Linksys router as yours and I am having a lot of trouble setting it up. At one stage I thought I did it but then it asked me for "Network key". It looked to me like a password as you had to enter it twice. I put in a certain password, but it did not get me anywhere. At the moment the laptop finds the wireless router that I set up but I am unable to connect to it. What did you do for your original configuration? Did you go through the instructions using the CD i.e. 1 Connect the Router And 2. Configure the Router, which I found very technical, asking for lots of information that I do not have?
Maybe you can remember how you did it that will help me set up this box of tricks.
When you configured it, did you make it secure so only you have access to the router?
    Thanks in advance.

The setup configuration would have asked you for a phrase when it generated a network key. Go back into the router control panel to retrieve it.
