Voice calls to Australia via the PC????

Hi there
Please can anyone help....

My friend lives in Australia and we meet up everyweek on msn, but we can't get the voice facility to work between us, yet I can have a voice chat with my sister who lives in the UK - so I think my PC is OK

Is it the distance? Or......does anyone know of a different service we can use, it costs too much to talk on the phone (we are on for ages!)

Many thanks
Wendy

Try SKYPE, its free for PC to PC, I can reccomend it. I liked it enough to now use it as my main telephone line through SkypeIN.

After reading another thread (in the freebie section), I use both Skype (overseas) and Voipbuster (UK landlines). In fact after telling my friend in Oz about Skype he phones up every day! (Usually to tell me about other people who are interested in skype).
  • G'day Wendy

https://www.voipbuster.com is 1p a minute to Oz... it's free to the UK (landlines) though. Your friend could download voipbuster add 5 euros to activate and she could call your homeline for free. Before you add 5 euros you can test for free but the call is limited to 60 seconds to stop abuse... if it works... she can call you for nowt!...

Would you prefer to talk landline to landline to Australia? - it might even be more convenient!! If so check up https://www.topupnow.co.uk

You make 1 call to a premium number which "credits" your account with £1.50 to make calls. You then dial (using same uk landline that you phoned the premium number) an access code for Australia and the number you want. Each call costs a 5p connection charge - plus a call charge. At the moment the call charge to Australia is 0p/min - so you should be able to talk for as long as you like for 5p, although I've read elsewhere that a call using topupnow was cut off after 45mins.....so he/she just redialled (at a cost of another 5p). All costs are deducted from your initial £1.50 credit. Connection quality is apparently very good!

    Hope this helps........ :)

Use Google Talk! You can download it here: https://www.google.co.uk/talk

You'll need a Gmail account to do this, if you don't have one then I can send you an invite... the interface is fantastic!

Once your signed up, you just add your contacts in and your away. There are x2 options, you can chat in voice or chat in text. It's the most simple but effective bit of software I've seen... and it just works.

Drop me a mail or PM if you want an invite.. or ask here... I'll need your current email address.

    All hail Google Talk!

They will indeed. When I invite you... you'll get your own set of invites, so you can then invite the people you wish to speak with...

  • Thank you everyone for your help - you have been great, I'll look into each one and see which one suits my needs.
