My course isn't very intensive and I have a lot of free time...

Hi,

I started my course Film and Video, Theory and Practice at University of East London last week, and was shocked at how little work I am expected to do, at least for this semester. So anyways rather than wasting all of my time at the union bar, I thought it would be wise to get a job, but then I remebered how much I hate jobs, so my dad suggested I run a business from my flat. This sounds like a better idea to me, and I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions for a business type thing that I could run from a very small flat in the Docklands? Someone suggested dropshipping to me, citing this website: http://www.atsdistribution.co.uk/
Now it seems like a very good idea to me, as it requires no storing of goods etc... but it also sounds quite risky, like the initial sign up of £30, which I can't really afford, unless I'm gonna see it again.... soon.

Any help or ideas or pointing in the right direction would be very greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance
Ross

Go out and get a job. You will need something to pad out your CV when you finish your degree. Showing you can work as part of a team etc will work in your favour.

ps we all hate working for a living - but it's a necessary evil!!

Move out of the flat, and rent it out. Find another flat 20 miles away and start cycling. Instant profit.

I'd suggest doing some of the TONS of courses UEL offers. Not to sound like an academic snob but UEL does not have the best reputation (highest drop out rate in the country!!) and a lot of employers look down on it. By taking additional courses you'll demostate your ability to stick with your course and bulk up your CV.

I would suggest you try to get some experience in the field you are studying to try to get ahead of the game ready for when you leave, 3 years will zoom by and I hate to say it but I agree with above, when you leave you will be up against a lot of film students from better recognised Uni's.

What about trying to get work at the film academy they often have strange little flexible jobs, cant remember its full name but its off of tottenham ct rd?

Or offer yourself for free for short stints at film companies, again tottenham ct rd and soho are packed full of them, even if you get archiving work you will get the name on your cv and you never know where a dull job in a good academy will get you. Also perhaps you can try to self teach yourself editing packages, MTV often have positions in editing pop up and again a great start for the career you are presumably aiming for.

Try to head for your chosen profession rather than random jobs as long term it will help you a lot more, and there are plenty of free labour jobs in your particular area of interest but you will need to be a bit more creative in your thinking!.
