Alternative (cheaper) vehicle inspections.

I am looking to buy a used car, and have seen one on Autotrader but as it is in Liverpool and I am in Devon I was thinking of getting a vehicle inspection report done before I proceed. Does anyone know of a reliable alternative to AA and RAC which I understand are quite pricey. I will pay if I have to as ultimately it must be money well spent, but obviously would like a competitive service if there is such a thing.

Learn everything possible yourself and inspect yourself. Otherwise only alternative would seem to be to drive it to a garage if they can agree to do an inspection.0
