Renault Megane 1.6 rattle

Hello, can anyone offer any advice on the following? Our '97 Megane has begun to rattle when started up. It then rattles occasionally, usually when we slow down or change gear, but only for the first few minutes of driving, then is fine. It sounds like it's coming from underneath so we thought it might be the exhaust but have never managed to watch it doing it. The exhaust does look like it's vibrating quite a bit, is it meant to do that? Otherwise it looks fine and we can't see anything like brackets obviously missing or loose.

Does anyone have any idea of what this might be and if it's likely to be expensive to fix?

Many thanks,

Ivy

Megan's of that age used to suffer TERRIBLE cat faults. So it's probably that..

Call in to an MOT station and ask them to test it while you wait.
Check your heat shield first tho lol.
  • i would imagine it could be the little heat shield over the cat. All it is is a little metal try like a disposable baking tin, mine did it when i hit it on something, all i had to do was bend it a little

I've had similar rattles on my Megane, first time it was the Baffler in the rear Exhaust had come loose, replaced rear box, another time the heat shield came loose and was catching the exhaust .

my 97 megane had awful exhaust rattle, due to loose exhaust. Spent a fair bit replacing it several times, but the exhaust was always problematic

Thanks all, it has turned out to be the rear exhaust box, but also has a oil leak from the head gasket, so going to cost more to fix than it's worth. So looks like we'll be looking for a new car...
