ScottishPower Final Bill

stacks Posts: 1 Newbie
Hello,

Firstly, sorry if this is not in the correct place.

I have changed suppliers moving away from scottishpower. They sent me a final bill totalling £330. Considering we pay £90 per month already I fail to see how we owe this much as we have only been with them a year.

I called to complain and was told thats becasue its always been based on an esitmate reading. I moaned about the fact I have given readings, to which they said "Oh the readins you gave us on the site all failed, so none were taken" I then moaned about the fact they didnt tell me this.

Can they do this? its ridiculess?

Thank you

If you used £1410 worth of energy, and have only paid for £1080 of it then yes you will owe the funds.

However, I would check they are not billing you for any future use, and that your readings are correct

It does mean that you are paying the tariff in place now, rather than the ones in place at the times you gave the readings on the web site.

I've never updated a reading on a supplier's web site. When you give a reading on the web site, do Scottish Power submit a new bill for payment? If so, your reading should have been shown and if it differed that was the time to query it. If a new bill is not submitted for payment, how did you know how much to pay?

Their position will be that your bills(for the year you were with SP) would have shown that the meter reading was estimated and you should have checked this reading with that on the meter, or the readings you gave.

This is a very common scenario with estimated meter readings - people simply do not check their Utility accounts correctly.

Not usually. When a bill is created based on an actual (or customer) reading that is different to the estimated consumption, the bill is recalculated back perhaps as far as the last actual reading, so averaging out the shortfall (or sometimes overcharge) over the entire period. Estimates are used to decide how much should be charged for at each rate so that not all the undercharged units are calculated at todays (higher) rates.

If the account is to actual readings, then the bill could be correct.
If it is a case that the they had been underestimating your usage and then they got an actual you would have to pay for the usage. As the final readings have been provided by the new supplier you now have a final bill up to the enegy you have used.
Looks like you will have to pay

I've just had an issue with Scottish power, we moved and kept them as a supplier. The old house had gas, new place does not. We were in credit with our electric, and in debt with our gas. I was advised the outstanding gas bill would be taken from the electricity credit, and then the balance applied to my new bill at the new address. Then they took two lots of money from my account, the new direct debit, and the outstanding gas bill. The staff are useless, one staff member told me the credit from our electricity bill had been sent to us in a cheque, to our old address!

The real problem is yet to come, we are leaving the country soon, and Scottish Power are telling me they only refund credit by cheque, not into the bank, and won't post the cheque overseas.

I wonder how much they make from people not cashing cheques sent to old addresses, not sent abroad?

I asked Scottish Power this very question, but never received a reply. Now I have to switch to someone who will refund the credit into my bank, or post a cheque overseas.

How long does it take to get a final bill. I left SP last week from BG, I had to give BG two meter readings which they asked via letter did this online. I give monthly meter readings to SP on 25th of every month, last time I looked online I was in credit by £17, now I cant get online with them as the account is closed.

Perhaps you should consider setting up a redirection service with royal mail for a while

I'm sure the cheque from Scottish Power won't be the only piece of mail that'll get sent to your UK address ;)

Normally they issue the final bill bill within about 4 weeks - but can depend how long BG take to pass the final meter readings back to SP.

You could always call SP and give them the same details you gave to BG which should remove any delay that might be caused by BG.
