ATM Scandal

My mother requested £200 from an ATM. The cash didn't come out but the bank (grrrrr) says the transaction was "successfully completed" and so don't want to know. Has anyone fought this successfully? It's a scandal!

  • Calm down it is not a scandal.
Did she take money out of an account at her own bank or was she using someone else's?
She should report the matter firstly to her own branch who will get her to complete the necessary forms to enable the bank to investigate.
If it is her own bank then they will check first of all that the money did not go back into her account - some machines do this if the money is not taken quickly enough or they will check the machinery in the ATM when it is next opened to see if any notes are jammed in it and finally they will balance the machine to see whether they have a discrepancy.
If she took money out of another bank's ATM the process is rather more long winded and can take 2-3 weeks to sort out. Each bank has it its own reciprocal unit for dealing with these instances so branch A sends the completed claim form to their Bank A unit who will in turn contact the unit of Bank B who in turn contact Branch B to see whether there were any problems with machine or misbalance.
Customer is then updated with result of enquiry and in all genuine cases they are refunded.

I don't know if it's all but certainly a lot of ATM's have cameras. I'm sure if you ask them to view and make available to you the video footage it would clarify things. I had a similar occurance a few years ago but the bank acknowledged a fault so the money was not debited. If it is genuine (you have to look at the bank's view that you may be trying it on) then you should certainly push things. Did anyone 'actually' check that the ATM cashed up ok? I don't know who would be best to call though. I don't think it would be a police matter but maybe Trading Standards would be interested. Is there some sort of onbudsman for banks or would it fall under the FSA net? Complain, ask for checks, complain some more and be persitant until you get somewhere. Good luck

Are you sure the machine had not been tampered with?

I used to work in a bank - this should be relatively easy to sort out - because if the money definitely didn't come out then the money in the machine wouldn't add up correctly. Is it possible that she didn't wait long enough for the money to come out and someone else took it?

I once saw money visible in an ATM
    I took the money.
The bank, NatWest, was not open at the time.
    I counted the money ... £200.
I thought about it for a while.
I thought it might matter a lot to the person whose money it was.
I took it to the police station.
I asked them what I should do with it.
They said either leave it with us or take it to the bank.
I took it to the bank.
In due course they sent me a bottle of single malt whisky.
They told me that someone had reported not getting £200 from the ATM.
The customer concerned did not write and thank me for handing the money in.
However I have felt good about what I did ever since.

  • In fairness to the person who lost the money, they may not have known it was you but at least the bank rewarded your honesty.

In answer to the OP, yes it happened to me and my bank was good enough to replace the withdrawal pending investigations, which turned out exactly as I had told them.

Methinks, under Data Protection, they wouldn't have been able to identify to you (or even vice versa?) the 'customer' ;)

Indeed. A lot of people would just smile, take the money and spend it on something nice. It takes someone special to hand the money back.

I once made a withdrawal from an ATM, didn't get my money. It was a bank other than my own and it took over 3 months and several trips to the bank to get the money back.

At times, they made me feel as if I was making it up.

So be patient, and keep going back to the bank.
