The amount of precaution makes no difference, so kindly refrain from judging me.

It does make a difference in that you have to take reasonable steps. So, leaving it on display whilst you are not in a car is is silly and common sense alone should tell you not to do that. Most car insurances are quite clear that theft only covers items locked in the boot or a lockable glove compartment when you are not in the car yourself.
My point is that even if someone mugs you and takes your sat nav at knife point - you are not covered.

Actually, in this case you almost certainly would be covered as you were in the car and present and under duress. The most reasonable action at that point is to hand it over.

lisyloo, I do take offence. I have already done the self-deprecating and I was posting to warn others to make their own preparations.....
If you start a thread with the the tone and language you did then you should expect responses of the same ilk. However, I thought lisyloo's response was spot on and polite.

Yet, the sat nav was completely out of sight as this is my habit when parking after a journey.

It may not have been left on display but I don't think enyone can be 100% sure that they haven't been seen.

There are cases of criminals watching from a distance with binoculars to see what people are loading/unloading.

It's difficult to be 100% safe especially when criminals are highly organised rather than opportunist but I would suggest being cautious when loading and unloading expensive things into the boot.

So to extend the earlier analogy, if a burglar stole your Christmas presents because they'd seen you unload them from your car to your house, that would be negligent?

I live in a small town where there is very low amount of crime.

It IS reasonable for us to expect no crime here.

Two rather contradictory statements, I would not think it reasonable to not expect any crime anywhere in this day and age, whether the item was hidden or on view hardly makes a difference if someone breaks in and has a quick opportunist rummage.

As a police officer once told me after I had a car broken into and some low value items stolen, the only answer is never to leave anything that is nickable in a car then it cannot go missing.

If you left the front door open or windows open then yes. In the case of cars, the comparable bit is not locking valuables away.

  • Ok leaving you Sat Nav in the car the insurance tell you that you are not insured, however and i think this is relevent, leaving the sat nav in the house you may not be insured.
My mum got broken in to and they stole her sat nav unit from a draw. Her insurance AXA have a clause in the house insurance which excludes Sat nav as it is a car accessory so they will not replace hers which was 1 week old. There advice was to claim on the car insurance who also say it is a household insurance not the car insurance and any claim would be viewed as a fraudulent claim.
When asking Axa where do you store a sat nav they can not answer it. You can not leave it in the car as it is classed as negligent and in the house you are not insured.
    Dont you just love insurance!

I'm fairly certain that it will be covered if you sensibly lock it in your car's glovebox.

When i querried that with Axa they said if you leave it in your car it would not be covered on there car insurance as they advise you to take items like Sat Navs, MP3 ect with and not leave them in the car. if you were in the car and you were involved in a car jack or snatched whilst you are there then yes they would cover it, but leaving it unattended even locked out of site you are not.
