Fax tones on phone line

I am occasionally getting fax tones as well as a caller when I answer the phone - I suppose only when the PC is on. The fax console says it is receiving a fax, but fails after about 45secs unless I manage to end it myself before then, allowing me to speak to the caller without all the noise.
What may or may not be relevant is that I have also been receiving unsolicited fax calls, which also fail, from 0800 3289393 which BT admit is a number used by them or their engineering contractors. They have apologised, but haven't given any explanation.
Any ideas or similar experiences?

If you seldom receive faxes on your PC, simply change the configuration of the fax program so that it doesn't auto-answer. Obviously you will need to change that on the occasions when you do want to receive faxes.
If you receive faxes regularly then it will help to increase the number of rings before the fax program picks up the line, as it will allow you to pick up the phone first. Most fax programs will allow you to alter this.
Your unsolicited fax calls are probably completely unrelated to this.0 -
Thanks! I found similar suggestion by googling and have just taken your advice and disabled the automatic receiving of faxes. As you say, although I occasionally send faxes, I don't often receive them and so when I do want to I shall have to remember to go into the fax console Tools to change the configuration.".....where it is corrupt, purge it....."0
