cot or cot bed?

My teenagers are still using the same beds we had for them from about 18 months. Have changed the matresses but the wooden frames are fine.
What I found handy when they were tiny and needed settling or were unwell was that I could go and get in their bed with them and then sneak back to my bed when they were asleep and DH didn't get disturbed if he was working in the morning.
If you're considering a moses basket bear in mind that the baby only fits into them for around three months and will be just as happy in a cot from birth (providing you have room for it in your room).

We have a cotbed in the box room. Our eldest daughter was in in (as a cot) until she was 2yrs & 2 months, then we moved her into a big bed in her new room as the youngest was due a month later & we did not want her to thnk she was moving from her bed for the baby.
For us it is the best solution as we would not be able to fit in all the other furniture with a bigger bed.
We kept our original cot bed mattress & our eldest sleeps on that on the floor in the box room when we have visitors, Nanna sleeps in her bed & grandad on the blow up mattress in her room (or whoever the visitors are!)

We had a cot (cheap one from IKEA), and then an extendable bed from IKEA which did up to the age of 5 ish. Then a cabin bed from freecycle - and so only the cost of the mattress for that one! The IKEA items are really cheap and robust.0

I thought about doing without a moses basket this time round, however I was given one by a friend and I have to say I could not have done without it. Both of my children have always had the moses baskets downstairs during the day and then taken up and moses basket placed in the cot, I presumed this is what most other parents did to be honest but after your post I guess I am wrong lol ... Mind you with my daughter I would have had to buy one as she had very bad eyes when she was only a week old (they were bleeding all day and night) took almost 4 weeks to clear upRaising kids is like being held hostage by midget terrorists0 -
Thank you so much for all your replies. It's so useful to hear from people who have used both. I think that I'll go with a cot and then buy a standard single when the baby out grows this.
Thanks again for your help.0
