I've used HSBC for 10 years (since I started University) and I had a few problems with overdraft fees back in about 2000, but I got them all refunded. When they charged me I went into a branch, when they refused a second time I went to a different branch to get it refunded. When they refused to refund third time I called them up. When it happened a fourth time I call my branch. And when it happened a fifth time, I wrote to my manager telling them that it was THEIR fault and they should extend my overdraft (one payment kept taking me over the limit for about 3 days at a time). They conceded on that point too and gave me an extra £200 interest free OD.

Since then I've not had a problem, and I pay off the last £500 of my (interest free) overdraft next tuesday before the interest starts. The limit's £2000, so will get them to reduce it to £500 rather than 0 so I don't get charged should I trip over the limit.

HSBC may not be the best banking service, but it does have kick !!! online banking, and I'd rather stick with them than risk a replacement bank being crummy in comparison (I've been using online for 10 years now without incident).

    Good luck!

So true HSBC are like most banks now, they are great if you dont go overdrawn, have any skipped dd's ... like all banks once you do these things they start charging...

Great news, £30,500 to £3999 is really quite a mission. Well done, hopefully the last one will go much easier for you.

wow, that kind of puts it into context, was it really that much!?

hard work, stubborn-ness and drive to get debt free, have what has helped me. have not spent any money on frivolous things, and only spent on things like clothes when they were needed.

(a big shout out to our two next door neighbours, whose semi-permanent heating stoves heat our house :), and also a shout out to my place of work who let me have the vast tree trunks they cut down in our grounds for free firewood :) )

plans? well firstly to get engaged to my long-suffering other half, (i am taking her to paris for new years eve), then a new car, then start saving for a house. plus proper holidays are now possible! woohoo!

if there is one thing this whole paying off debt has taught me, is that it can be done. singlemindedness is the key. feels like i can fly now a vast weight has gone.

i always have been a tightwad anyway (a large 90% portion of the debt went into a failed business venture), but there is one thing i am realising, although i may be 99% debt free, i'm not going to go stupid and spend spend spend!

  • Only just caught up with this. Amazingly well done Kolin, this sort of story really helps keep me going and the thought of not having the debt albatross hanging around your neck must be brilliant.
