As I mentioned above wouldn't n be quicker?

Speeds of up to 270 mbps* (I assume I need n pci cards or usb) for optimum transfer
Quicker but still not that quick. 802.11n will get you 70-80Mbps if you are lucky.

Just rang netgear they said that I also need n cards or it will by default go to g, I wonder if the home plugs are better?

They said router would be fine in garage as long as it isn't freezing

Nobody has asked why you need a server machine for a home network? if you can do without it especially if your only using it to backup files to then really i would use an external drive instead and save on the electric bill.

So far all you mention is backing up large files and photo's etc this is what an external hard drive is for. I dont see you have need for a server is there anything you have yet mentioned like running a website from it? id like more info on why you need a server because we can maybe eliminate it with a few changes to your PC's.

Tom I had a server for many years mainly old pc's I use it mainly for browsing net, downloading and backups. I probably wouldn't need it now once I got the new desk as my main aim is to use the gaming pc we have which is quiet noisy pc due to all fans it has on. I do keeps backups on a usb 2 drive also. I lost some data about a year ago and I then thought never again so I keeps backups on usb2 hard drive and also a pc hard drive just in case. I also have them on dvdr but tend not to backup so much on there as I have this backup tasks set up on the fly

I put the router and server in the garage running a temporary extension lead, whilst signal on wireless is about 80% in various and sometimes its very low -30% I lose the signal a couple of times last night and had to repair wireless using xp network repair function to clean dns

I am either going to have to get a better router, or home adaptors (using mains wires) or put it all back where it was and keep old desk

We use the homeplug arrangement and it suits us well. We got really sick of the perpetual disconnects from wireless.

Make sure you buy a recently manufactured one as the first model we had was recalled due to overheating. This was AFTER we'd had one replaced because it overheated

Do you get reasonable speed Frivolous?

I noticed they do a 200 Mbps version also but according that that article n routers can reach maximum speeds of 380Mbps

Right now (with O/H playing WoW on PC next to me)

That's using a BT Homehub with a connection of 3,840kbps, which is about as good as we can get at our place.

forget those speeds you won't get anything like em and the fastest your router will do to any hardwired pc is 100mbs anyway, just use the 85mbs homeplugs they generally outperform wifi at twice the speed.

money wise the 200mbs av homeplugs are about £50 each and you would need 3 and/or a gigabit hub to get the benefit vs About £50 for a pack of 2 of the 85mb ones

I found myself in a similar position a few weeks ago.

54mbit/s wireless will really get you about 10mbit/s on a good day once you put a couple of walls in the way.

I bought a couple of the homeplug devices (ZyXEL) that are rated at 200mbit/s raw but as others have said the reality is lower. So much so that they only have a 100mbit/s port on them.

    BUT

With my PC in my home office and my server in my garage which is detatched from the house and has 2 mains distribution boards in between, I am getting a pretty constant 50mbit/s on large file transfers which is far better than any wireless connection will give.

As for the cold in the garage?

I design data centers for a living. I spend a large part of my time trying to cool servers so I can say with confidence that as long as the computer is powered up and dry, it will be quite happy in the winter.

    The downside.

Home plug is more expensive that wireless. My 2 adaptors cost about £90 but I am very happy with the outcome.
