How long have I got before I need to replace tyres?

I drive a Renault Modus automatic car, which is just 3 years old. My car had its first MOT today (and passed) but I was told by the dealer that 3 of the tyres are down to 3mm tread depth and the rear left is down to 2mm, so all of them need to be replaced. They have quoted me £85 per tyre (total £340) but I've just spent £370 on MOT & servicing today so I'm not too happy about having to spend more on tyres at the moment! I've looked at the online tyre retailers and they only seem to be about £5 cheaper so I may as well get them from the Renault dealer.

The thing is I'm going on holiday at the end of next week and I will be driving there and using the car whilst there, so should I try and get the tyres replaced before I go or will it wait until I come back? I just wondered how quickly tyres wear down? Thanks!

£85 per tyre sounds a bit steep. Have you tried Blackcircles.com

I'd get them replaced pronto. You can receive 3 points per tyre (I think it's that many).
    Happy chappy

Swap the one worn to 2mm with the spare if that has good tread. How far are you travelling for the holiday?

1.6mm is legal limit I believe, so the 3mm ones will be fine for a while yet. 2mm one is probably best replaced with the spare though (if better condition)

The legal minimum is 1.6mm. Im sure you will be ok to go on holiday , I reckon you have a good few months on the 3mm tread tyres but keep an eye on the 2mm tread one.

Each tyre should have a tred depth indicator - its like a bit where when the wear is level with this then the tyre needs replacing.

When comparing tyre prices check to see if it includes new valve, balancing , old tyre disposal etc.

Assuming the car uses a normal tyre as a spare why not swop that with the 2mm tread tyre . The spare is still legal and usable and you get a new tyre .

Whilst the legal minimum is 1.6mm, 2mm is really the worst you want to let them get unless you're not bothered about steering and braking in the wet.

1000 miles at most. How much do you value your families lives?

I've not got your type of car, but thought I'd pip in anyway.

My car's now done 50,000 miles. Just had it MoT'd. They said the tyres were close, but no need to replace them yet.

Tyres (unless perished through age) will wear out based on mileage, not age. My car is 7 years old.

2/3mm on your tyres is it worth the risk , i now it not money saving put tyres are the only thing between you and the road, i would change them better to be safe than dead
look at it this way your on the motorway doing the speed limit and somthing happens so you have to hit the brakes ,you stop all well and good nice and safe .
are your tyres legal now even through you did not skid with abs ??

here this mite help you live http://www.rospa.com/roadsafety/advice/motorvehicles/tread_depth.htm

And driving style; the back tyres on Mrs LA's RX-8 were slick after 12,000 miles:eek: .

That did include some abuse on a track day though.:D

might be worth measuring them yourself...the garage might have exagerated it to try and drum up a sale

once theyre close to 2mm its time to change, they wont work well in heavy rain , new ones are cheaper than having a crash
