Quick question regarding making DVD player region free

I've found a firmware update that'll make my DVD player region free (LG 5083 - hack found here: http://aiwaownersnetwork.tripod.com/pages/lg/5000_series_firmware.html as well as other places), but have also found a hack to play VCDs.
Do I need to do the VCD thing (http://www.reviewcentre.com/review10076.html) before burning the disc, or will it work just with the hack? I'm confused.

TBH I'm surprised that it needs a hack to play VCDs - I've not come across one that won't.0
