Have any of you met with people being negative about you repaying your debts?

Just as above really??
Most people i tell (family/friends etc.) are very supportive and understand im paying them off quickly - i.e. leaving myself enough for basics (food etc. and 1 treat a month) so that i can breathe a sigh of relief and be debt free for the first time since i started working.
And also so i can get myself the house i want, and start living.
But i have had 2 family members and 1 friend over this weekend behave very negatively towards me regarding me repaying my debts. 1 family member in particular said (and I quote) "you should just go bankrupt, so much easier and you get out of paying the money back" and a friend said "why bother paying back more than you have to, you're better off enjoying your money now"
It upset me a bit, but i know im doing the right thing! :rotfl:

I have quite a few friends that take the same approach!!! When i explain that i am going to have to miss out on a night out or a weekend away i am always greeted with very confused faces.
Most the friends are in debt themselves and take the worry about it later attitude. What really annoys me is they seem to get away with it ~ whilst im worrying about making minimum payments let alone over payments they seem to be worrying about what new clothes to buy for the next big night out!!! Its really unfair!!!
I keep myself going by thinking i will be the one debt free and has the best car, owns a house and has lots of nice clothes paid for myself ~ and im pretty sure the debt will catch up with them one day

I think people can be negative, my biggest debt has been the mortgage and bancruptcy has never been an option as my big debts were the mortgage and money owed to my mum to buy my ex out of the flat.
People did think I was strange paying off a 2.5k od as "everyone has one" but I worked out that over the life of the overdraft I had paid 1.5k in interest! So that HAD to go.
I find that some people think you may as well just run up the debts and pay the minimum but if I had not of paid off my debts I would not have been able to remortgage and would have been stuck paying an extra 130 pounds a month on a bad interest rate.
When I tell people I want to pay off my mortgage they start tutting and asking why, but I am on an interest only mortgage and I dont want to be stuck loosing out so much of my salary every month!Debt Free - done

Its definitely the "worry later attitude"... i had it for 6 odd years, and its not done me any good, when i try and explain that to people i just get blank looks :rotfl:
Ah well, we all know we are doing the best, just confuses me sometimes when people would rather stay in debt and create more debt for longer.

Yes people think we should just pay the minimum each month rather than trying to clear off the debt. I want to be free of everything including the mortgage so I can relax and enjoy life.Barclaycard 3800

I've never had any negative comments (except OH who thinks 'every couple our age has debt, so why shouldn't we?') but I do get funny looks when I mention that I am trying to pay off my debt as quick as possible so I can start to save for a house deposit. They don't understand why I don't svae the cash and have debt at the same time, so I try to explain and I get the 'money bore' look, so I shut up!'We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars' - Oscar Wilde0

Well done you for facing up to your problems!
I've never had any negative attitudes towards paying off my debt but I've had several regarding my getting in debt in the first place, which is understandable I suppose but at least I'm facing up to it now.
I actually get a thrill every month to not be in my overdraft and have some extra money towards paying off debts. And hey, at least once we've finished paying our debts off we'll be able to live comfortably, enjoy ourselves and stay within our means while everyone else is declaring bankruptcy/paying off debts well into retirement!!PROUD TO HAVE DEALT WITH MY DEBTS0 -
Hi,
Not so much negative as bewildered. Everyone keeps asking me where I am going for my hols this year. When I say I am not as we are trying to pay off debts the attitude seems to be "why, everyone is in debt, enjoy life while you can". I have to say up until LBM this was my attitude, so can't be too judgmental.0 -
Well... I get the "oh no someone asked a debt question!" looks too when I get started at work
But I never push my advise on people only if they make a comment about money trouble will I either direct them here or point out how they could save/get cheaper/help themselves... Some listen, some don't
Some are very dismissive and look at me like I'm a total nutjob - after all OH and I earn a pretty handsome sum of money, but we also have a handsome debt - not counting the mortgage. We're lucky - our's isn't a bad debt, it's affordable debt but I still want it gone as soon as possible as we're planning on starting a family and what would we do about debts if we had to survive on OHs salary and whatever benefits i might qualify for when the baby comes? Easy if we're debt free! Not AS easy if we're not...

I have told a couple of close friends, one who is very supportive and the other one who thinks having a OD is completely normal.
my other friends well I tend not to tell them really. I just try to be REALLY cheap or make sure i have enough Money to look normal.
one of my friends with no debts and rich parents - I just don't talk about money to her her idea of no money is not being near a cash point! #
I also get the nut job look - "but you earn so much"
and most people think I am bonkers doing Avon!

Most of our mates are in debt anyway, so having cheap nights out is something of a competitions 'I only spent £1.45' 'Well I only spent 98p!'
I'd worry about mates who were just interested in who had the biggest car - it's only storing up trouble. One day you'll be debt free, and they will just be starting their journey - you can be there to help them out. This year I'm getting organised once and for all, and going to buy a house with my wonderful other half. And that' s final!
