Cheap cars to insure for learner drivers

  • Check out Parkers website - they detail for each car/model/engine/fuel the insurance group it will fall into - closer to one it is the cheaper it will be. I have an 04 Skoda Fabia (Group 1) called Fred :rotfl:, which I got after passing test and costs me 1k to insure fully comp although I am 20.

But yeah, they also review what cars are good. The other option is to just do stupid amounts of online compare quote thingys! As suggested above a cheaper car (if she isn't going to be straying to far from home) may be better as 3rd party only - my OH is doing this as value of car is less than the cost of insurance.

I'm a learner driver and I have a p reg corsa 1.2, it cost me 370 from auction, its 120 for a years tax, costs about £40 to fill the tank and did well over 150 on the last half tank of petrol before i filled it up.

I shopped around with quotes and finally got quinn direct, for £590 for the year, with the insurance tax included plus free breakdown cover.

I'm 18, my mums a named driver and I drive it on my provisional licence

Also my insurance is third party fire and theft

Quinn are notorious for putting up the insurance by loads once you have passed your test - so I would advise you check this out once you pass.
  • To be honest with the credit crunch at the moment, having insurance on any car regardless of how cheap it may be, is hell. I've found an article which might help though, it lists a few 2nd hand cars that are supposedly cheaper in insurance then most.. worth a look..

    Hope I've helped.

  • Can I point out that the OP should be aware that the insurance will more than likely go up when their daughter passes their test. They are considered more of a risk without someone sat next to them, so I would do a few comparisons assuming she passes her test in a few months.

  • I have just done a very quick Confused.com search for you -

    Female born 23/02/1992
    License since 23/02/2009 Provisional
    1998 1.2 Corsa Breeze
My postcode (LN5) which will obv affect prices in a better/worse area
8000 miles a year, full time school student
    Kept on road at night

    £600 Quinn Direct
    £662 MyMotorQuote
    £850 Yes!

So it is possible to get cheap insurance, that £600 quote is less than my current one - 21 y/o male with 4NCB on a 2.0DTi Astra!

edit - im not about to go fiddling the details for after passing test and what not, you can do that ;)
  • Quinn double or even triple the cost on passing. We use diamond for dd 700 or 800 for the first 10 months at 18 (bonus accelarator) then 650 the second 10 months which did not go up when she passed her test a week after renewel. this is fully comp on a W reg nissan micra

    Hi all

Was a little surprised to come onto the board today and see this thread is still current :D .

To update everyone, DD1 bought an S reg Clio in July 2008, which she insured fully comp with Diamond on their 10 month accelerator plan for £668 (included OH and myself as named drivers, which bought the cost down).

She passed her test on December and was charged an extra £116 to see her through to renewal.
