Password protected file

In MS Word 2002, if you save a file with a password - just how secure/safe is it?

    I could crack it in about 10 seconds so not really secure, you need to use an external Encryption package the inbuilt MS one is flimsy

    It's ok to keep the casual user out, but anyone with a bit of knowledge can break it. Word 2003 offers more encryption options, including specifying a key length etc. but I doubt it's that secure. (Click advanced on the security options, when specifying a password).

    If it's really sensitive info, lock it away in a secure TrueCrypt volume.

    Zip the file and use password protection.

    7-Zip is open source and has this feature.
