Would a card company reject me?

Hi all

Would a card issuer reject me if I was unemployed but still got about £8k (on benefits) per year? Does the money actually come into it or is employment the main factor here?

Thanks
Waddle you do eh?

I think every case is looked at on merit but, given that benefits are supposed to be calculated to cover needs with very little left as disposable income, I would suspect that you would indeed be rejected. The question is why do you need a card? If you want to get a card to facilitate internet purchases and are not actually trying to borrow there are some possibilities, even the "sub-prime" cards don't charge interest if you clear your balance in full (but watch out for annual fees). If you are trying to borrow I am afraid I think it will be nigh on impossible, affordability criteria would really prohibit this.

Well I've had 2 credit card applications sent to me by companies in the past few days. I didn't ask for them and I didn't get any for months beforehand so what could have changed in that time?

The income has gone up by £1,300 per year in the time and so has my credit limit with a card (up from £400 to £1,400).

Basically if somebody is unemployed they won't get a credit card no matter what their income is. Is that right?

EDIT: The benefits I'm getting are DLA and IB

  • Well as people can get c/cards in their dogs name, anything is possible. If you want one bad enough someone will give you one. As for receiving offers you didn't ask for, don't we all. If you really want one responsibly, probably best place to start would be with your bank

No that is not right, my sister was unemplyed and filled the form in HONESTLY and said she was unemployed, stated what benefits she was on and Capital One gave her an UNSECURED card with a £500 limit.

    ;)

yeah my friends mum is on benefits - incapacity and dla and she has credit cards and store cards and she recently got an unsecured loan for £3000. So I guess it all depends - maybe she has a really good credit rating or something, oh she does own her own house maybe that makes a difference.
