About bidder id hidden

Why do some sellers insist that the bidder id is hidden(anonymous )?
Is this so that they can bid for their own item themselves & push up the auction price? How to spot shill bidding? Any advice?

I think it's a new ebay idea, not the sellers, but I agree that now it's even easier for unscrupulous sellers to have shill bidding with less chance of detection-then again alot of ebays new revolutionary ideas have been really stupid as of late

The id is hidden regardless of wether the seller wants it to be or not , the difference between private and hidden is private you cant see ANY details on the bidders

No, eBay have 'wonderful systems in place to identify and kick off people who shill bid under the new system'.........translated into ....... 'We (eBay) like shill bidding as it increases the final value fees and we get more revenue'

Best thing is not to bid on private auctions.

If its Private in my view there is something to hide!

From what I can see, is it now ebay's policy that all bids are private?

I am currently bidding and it only shows my name, all other bidders are bidder 1, bidder 2 etc, the item is now about £35.

So the seller could be bidding up with another account!!

Is this one of ebay's new systems to improve things??

On one of my accounts I set the feedback as private and nothing at all dodgy is going on. I'm selling business packages to buyers and lots of the buyers do not want the descriptions shown in the feedback. So because people do not show the bidders in an auction does not mean you have something to hide and does stop the spammers from targeting the people with interests in those products.
