I have a new router from AOL to connect to internet as my BT BB modem kept failing.
I can't set it up though. All connections are correct and I can connect via IE but not through AOL.
It keeps telling me it's failed on the Easy Install disc. Part of the problem is I think my PC. Normally when I lost my BT modem connection I went into
Network connections, New connections wizard and picked "set up manually". When I click to the next screen I have 3 options but the 1st two are greyed out so I cannot select the second one. I know before that they were not greyed out and I don't know how to get them back.

I am assuming that you have been sent a Speedtouch 585 v6 by AOL. Unlike a modem you don't have to create a connection in network connections and the old ones there will no longer worger work and should be deleted.
the AOL browser should now connect via the LAN (local area network}Via the ethernet cable and you just need to give the router the information it needs in order to log on.
Open internet explorer and type -
http://speedtouch.lan/
this should open up the control page for your router.Click SPEEDTOUCH on the list on the left hand side and then under PICK A TASK select SET UP
Welcome to easy set up should appear in a new window
click NEXT
Enter the USERNAME for your MAIN/MASTER AOL account (remember to pur @AOL.COM at the end) and your password and click NEXT again
leave wireless encryption disabled until you plan to use it (then do all this again but select the encryption you plan to use
click NEXT and then START
After a restart your router should log on automatically when turned on and your AOL software will connect through it without a dial up type dialogue0 -

The best thing about using a router on AOL is that you don't need to use their horrible bloatware. The router connects to the ISP and no software needs to be installed to configure the router. Better still the AOL stuff can be removed from your PC. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I seem to have a problem with my pc.
I have the error message Error 193 oxc1 (1068) keep appearing. I've run spybot, AVG scan etc. but I'm getting the windows firewall message keep popping up and documents etc won't open.
Also my PC won't shut down properly it tells me someone is still logged on etc and it's slow to start.
At the moment I'm getting all my docs, pics, videos etc off the pc in case I have to go back to a complete reinstall i.e. get the machine back to as it was when I originally bought it.
I've been trying to pin down what's happened and DD told me that she altered some settings on windows media player to access something on MSN. Don't know if this is the problem.
This first post descirbes a similar problem but the reponse is just too scary for me to attempt!~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Further progress. I've updated Windows XP service pack 3 and I can now connect using AOL.
My bluetooth seemed to be a problem on connection so I uninstalled and reinstalled software - hope this will be okay when I re-boot.
I tried putting the AOL Easy install disc into pc and letting it run as it checks everything and I'm still failing validation checks. Don't know why but it's working! I think there might be an error on the disk as it alters my screen resolution size to 800x600 (I like it 1024 x768).~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Another issue has come to light. When I switch off the power to my PC, which includes the router, when I next switch on then I've lost my router settings and have to re-enter my details via IE as AOL connect.
When I power back up my pc the green internet light isn't on whereas if I just switch off my pc but leave electrical supply to router I don't get this issue. I did the speedtouch in post 2 originally, do I need to redo?~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
