Cahoot, Smile, First direct are all aimed at above average earners with good credit ratings etc. At 21 they probably won't want to know - regardless of what your credit file says.
Try one of the mainstream lenders or if you like the idea of an ethical account (smile) start with co-operative bank and then get yourself upgraded to smile after 6-12 months once you have proved you know how to manage a current account.
Good luck.
R.Smile, it makes people wonder what you have been up to.

I was stood behind a young man in the queue at HSBC today. He had a baby face and was dressed in construction-industry type clothes. I overheard him asking if he could open a bank account and the assistant asked if he had a passport or drivers licence - he said no. She asked if he had any bills in his name, he said no as he lived with his parents. He was a bit peed off, and she was really sympathetic and eventually said that he would be allowed to open a basic bank account because he didn't have the necessary ID. She asked him how he had been managing up to press without a bank account, and he said he'd been paid cash in hand up but his company were now introducing paying into accounts hence needing an account now.

My son had the same problem, he had a Nationwide deposit account for a number of years, when he was 18 he asked for a current account but was turned down. He applied online to First Direct and was accepted.0
