Washing Machine Problems

So its been around three months without a washing machine in my house and I really need a new one. My house mate said he would sort it but I cant wait any longer Im going to take matters into my own hands. What we have at the moment is a Whirlpool 5145 and the only thing wrong with it is that the timer is broken. The guy that came to fix it said the part was around £170 which is silly. Would it be worth me trying to find this part for cheaper then getting someone to fit it or shall I just get a new washing machine? Where will I be able to get one on a budget? Is it worth the risk of getting one second hand? Please help as I have no idea what my best option is.

If you spend money on it will it be as new? or would it be better to put the £170 towards a new one.

I've found the advice on UK Whitegoods to be spot on. It may be worth posting on their Washing Machine advice forum. They don't list your model on their spare parts area but the Whirlpool site says the timer has been discontinued and part number WPL481228219264 should now be used which is for the AW8123 model and costs £102.9 from Whirlpool.
