Weak telephone signal

Hi all, I have just moved house and the place we have moved to is below the line of other houses in the area. Because of this the phones in the house are struggleing to keep there signal and either the line crackles or goes dead mid conversation. Is there any way of boosting our signal?

We are looking to buy a new set of cordless phones with up to 4 handsets so are there any that would hold a better signal?

Our telephone supplier is NTL if that helps.

Thanks,

Pete.

Have you tried complaining to NTL about the problem?

It shouldn't make much difference where you are situated when using a landline like NTL, BT, Telewest.

If you were talking about mobile phones then I could agree with that.

I'd ring NTL and complain to them but first using a normal corded telephone (known to work ok) and plug it in the main telephone socket. If you hear crackling on the line then mention it to NTL as the chances are its there fault.

If you are looking for a cordless phone then I'd choose digital cordless handsets (known as DECT) but as for any intereference then this can't easily be determined as some handsets may perform better than others but if you are in an area which is suspectible to intereference then it wont make much difference which cordless handset you choose.

It is hard to determine if you are in area suspectible to interference as a lot of things like computers, walls, TV's etc may interfere with it.

I generally find Panasonic DECT phones of good quality but I'm sure other members have other ideas as well.

If you were on BT then you can do what is known as a Quiet Line Test and this would allow you to test the line for interference/crackling, etc but I'm not sure about Telewest/NTL.

we are on NTL and have cordless phones....

cordless phones are notorious for picking up interference from other electrical equipment, but as mentioned some makes are better than others......
we have BT cordless and sometimes if the battery hasnt been charged enough (ie the phone has been left lying around all day) then this causes the intereference to be worse
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
