Donate old tights for charity!
Tightsplease are collecting tights to send to the Addis Ababa Fistual Hospital in Ethiopa. Please donate any tights, new or used, they must be washed and without any ladders or holes. The tights will be used to hold dressings in place when childbirth or Fistula condition cause injury. Dressing in this part of the body can be very hard to hold in place, tights are the perfect solution to ensure the dressing stays put thus limiting the chance of infection.
Any type of tight can be sent, but they must be clean and they must not have ladders or holes above the knees

Source here, also mentioned in the Observer magazine today. The maternal mortality rate in Ethiopia is given as a shockingly high 1 in 27 by UNICEF. Your unwanted tights can help stop that.
You know they're tangled up in your drawer driving you mad everytime you try and get some socks out so just chuck them in an envelope and use them to help save mothers lives. Save the tights going to landfill and save mothers lives!

BRILLIANT! I had a huge hunt for grey tights earlier this year, for a wedding, and in desperation picked up a brand new pair in a charity shop which I thought would be too small, and I was right. Now I've tried them on I can't take them back, now they're not so nicely wrapped I can't take them back, but I CAN send them off here.Signature removed for peace of mind0

The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia helps women who are abandoned by their community when complications during childbirth leave them incontinent.
The hospital has found tights to be the perfect solution to helping these ladies as the panty top of the legs is used to hold injury dressings in place. The legs of the tights are woven into rugs so nothing goes to waste. Holes and ladders aren't a problem. As long as they are clean, any tights brand is happily received.
If you'd like to donate your old tights, send them directly to:
Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital,
PO BOX 3609,
Behind Swiss Embassy,
Jimma Road,
Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia
To find out more about the appeal, see the Tightsplease website, but don't send your garments to the address it lists, as it's told us it's no longer able to forward them on to the hospital.
Thanks to MoneySaver Errata for highlighting the cause.

Please move if this isn't the right board, I just thought this was perhaps the board most read by women and mums who would understand the difficulties these poor women face after giving birth.

Thanks for posting this. I am a midwife and one of our doctors left in August to work in a remote area of Ethiopia caring for women with fistulae of childbirth so this is very relevant to me and my colleagues. I shall put notices up at work and start a collection to send out to the hospital. No reliance should be placed on the above.0

Please DONT send any. I thought it was a good idea but couldnt find anything about it on their website so sent them an email, they replied with
Vikki,
We are not in need of tights. We were about a year ago, but a panty hose manufacturer has supplied enough pantyhose for the hospital that even they don’t know what to do with them all.
Thank you for asking.
Terry
