Having a look through my list of programs I found some which say they have not been used since April 2005 ( when we got the computer)
Do I need them or can I get rid of them?
They are.....

ATI control panel
Creativemediasource
Dellmediaexperience
dellmediaexperience update
G15A922EN
a Load of Java and JS2E runtime environment updates
Learn2player
Modem helper
Modem on hold
Thanks

Both to do with your modem. You can delete the "On Hold" entry if you want but I'd leave the helper entry in.0 -
A really clear answer, thankyou so much!!0

Leave them alone. Needed for content on some websites.
This needs cleaning up. Earlier versions that are still installed will still make your PC vulnerable, as a lot of the Java updates are for security reasons.
You need to remove all the older versions. Go to this site http://prm753.bchea.org/software.html and download javara. This is a neat utility to "remove older versions" of Java Runtime. Once done, click the "Search for Updates" button to download the latest version, if one exists. Once downloaded and installed, run the "remove older versions" again to remove the last but one version.0
