I am hoping to start creating and amending a website for my wife.
I have completed a XML course that I hope may help (completed through my company), but have never done web work (Aircraft Engineering).
Can someone help me decide what company is a good first and very easy step that I can use to create a website?
I have been recommeded Joomla, any else use it?

I had never built a website before, I used the templates in Microsoft Office Live, which I found easy to use and I am quite proud of the result. Give that a try and you won't need anyone to build it for you!0

It really will depend what the purpose of the site is, if it needs all sorts of bells & whistles, such as forum, buying / selling, checkout etc then that will be more difficult & time consuming
If it is only a sort of Family homepage, or perhaps club / photo or shop with only a browserable catalogue then there are many WYSIWG packages around, such as the one mentioned by dwsjarcmcd, if you really do want to use the HTML option then on line tutorials are availableEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -

Very useful web design app.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0 -
i just started usung 000webhost.com today. It provides free hosting with no ads, and a decent storage and bandwith allowance.
There is plenty of DIY website builder tools and templates, and you can host an external domain.0 -

If you're on a Mac I hear Rapidweaver for designing sites is a godsend. And Awardspace.com is a great free host.0

My girlfriend's business includes a little bit of web design. She uses Nvu, which although is still in its early days is fast becoming a contender to the likes of Dreamweaver. There's versions for Windows, Mac and Linux. Plus, it's open source - free in every sense of the word!

Just seconding Chris667. I use nvu for my websites.
It is completely free, and I've found it to be better than some of the pay-for ones.
It's not quite Dreamweaver but it does run faster. Dreamweaver has got a bit big and bloated since Adobe bought it IMO.
Inserting stuff like Flash into nvu is still a lot more complicated than it needs to be, but it's great otherwise.0
