Depends how fancy you want your finished document to be..
"Microsoft word" does most things ok.

Abiword is free and is small to download. You can carry as copy on a memory stick.
OpenOffice is the other bigger option.

    In order of 'free'ness

Notepad - std part of windows - no formatting control to speak of
    look in Programs|Accessories

Wordpad -std part of windows - simple formatting control, may well be all you need
    look in Programs|Accessories

OpenOffice - free download - as much control as anyone is likely to need

MS Word - £££££ - more control than anyone is ever likely to need

    You got that right..

I think it has more controll than I could ever dream of learning how to use :o

I hate it when a computer program assumes that it "knows" what I am trying to do and changes stuff for me....
Then I have to spent 20 min reading the help section.:rotfl:

  • I don't believe this post!

What a question! How long have you been using a computer?

    I actually love Google Docs - http://docs.google.com

You have to sign up (if you don't have an account already), but there's nothing to download, you can access documents from any computer anywhere, share documents with other people, it autosaves as you type, and it tracks all changes - so you can undo any accidental deletions, even if you made the mistake a week ago, and you've saved the file 20 times since.

Ahhh... nothing like MS-DOS edit. Or, if you must use Windows, Metapad lite is just like Notepad, but without all the stupid bugs.

What's wrong with Wordpad? Openoffice is also a free Microsoft Office replacement if you need something more fancy..
