The answer will depend upon :-

    1) Who issued it ?
    2) Has somone tried to present it ?
    3) How much was it for and how much would it cost to cancel ?

You should tell the issuer immediately (OK, not 9am on a Sunday morning if it's a business, but as soon as they open on Monday), in case someone finds it and tries to present it. They will normally then place a stop on it (to prevent it being used) and issue you with a replacement. They will probably want you to confirm in writing.

And I probably wouldn't "demand" another one, ask politely yes, but demand no. As you've caused them inconvenience by having to cancel a cheque and make sure it's not already been cashed!
