I want to buy a portable external hard drive [2.5inch]
Looking at amazon, there are few like Freecom/WesternDigital.....Not sure any of them are particularly good. I am looking for atleast 160 or 250GB.
Any suggestions, much appreciated!:o

Hi euglycaemia. You don't give a budget, so i hope what i suggest helps.
If you'd like a small (in dimensions) external hard drive i have heard good things about the Western Digital My Passport drive. This is available from amazon for £65 for a 250GB drive, which can be powered solely via USB, (no DC power connector needed - hence great portability)
The other option is that you can buy an external hard drive chasis in which you put your own hard drive. If you want to stick to 2.5" i'd reccomend the Icybox (IB-266StUS-B 2,5") and you'll just need but a hard drive. You may be persuaded by a 3.5" option where you could get the IcyBox (IB-361StUS-B-BL) with a 3.5" hardrive such as the Samsung 500Gb HD202IJ (which has great reviews), which together would cost the same as the WD drive but would have double the capacity.
I have the Icybox for a 3.5" drive and find it great. It also has eSATA as well as USB 2.0, which gives faster speeds than USB 2.0, (obviously provided you have a eSATA port/bracket on your computer) Hope that helps.

Assuming i am allowed to post links...
I bought the chasis from Kustompcs.co.uk. Typically they are not the cheapest place to buy from, but their customer service is second to none and I have never had any problems with them.
They have a whole section of their shop devoted to external storage.
I bought the IcyBox (for a 3.5" drive) £32.50
And i'm actually now comtemplating buying this chasis as it can take two 3.5". (£32.99).
As for a hard drive i recommended the Samsung, it is 500Gb (£49.50)drive and has had great reviews and, if you are like me its actually well regarded as a quiet hard drive (look it up at SilentPCreview).
So together it comes in at £82 - which aint bad .
Hope that helps.

Iomega eGo 250GB on my laptop. Very nice piece of kit.
Western Digital drives are unreliable pieces of rubbish in my professional opinion (and long bitter experience). I'd rather revert to writing everything down on paper than trust my data to one of their drives.

I have a Lacie portable external drive.
Small and very reliable plug and play, ideal.0 -

Had no problems with the WD Passport portable drives (nor the WD MyBook desktop drives either). Reliable and well made.0
