New Ipod Classic

I've never used an Ipod before, but have just bought one - an 80gb classic.I've easily mastered the music playing aspect of it, but am just wondering what other uses it has. With that much storage, and thinking ahead to the holidays with the kids I am just wondering if you can download videos from TV channels such as the BBC Iplayer to watch on your Ipod? Also, other than Itunes are there any other websites out there that are useful to use with an Ipod? Also is there any good software that will transfer say a DVD (non DRM!) into an Ipod compatible file - and is it worthwhile doing this bearing in mind the time it would take to convert?

Any advice on these issues or any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Some reasonably good free podcasts available on Itunes. I usually download a few of these before I go away on holiday.

I also have a Soduku game that I downloaded from Itunes that passes a few hours. However this wasnt a freebie

I don't think you can use videos from the BBC iPlayer, but don't quote me on that.

Use Handbrake to convert any video format onto MP4 playable on iPod but you can't use DRMed videos (like from BBC iPlayer).
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

Roxio's Popcorn (commercial software) can convert a lot of formats (DVD etc) to the iPod too.

You can store photos on your iPods, back up files, all sorts!

they're formatted for ipod touch / iphone, which is a nice widescreen display, so will look tiny and small and tiny, on an ipod classic display!

  • iSquint is free as is great for converting videos to mp4 format for iPod or Apple TV.

Handbrake does the DVD ripping (always found it bloody slow myself though), and Tubesock is great for downloading Youtube videos into iPod format, or the freeware AirTube is pretty good for the price but not as useful as Tubesock.
