Buy a car v rent a car ???

We have a second home in France and a couple of our neighbours are English/Irish who like us spend as much time as possilble there. We all rent cars while we are there but a lot of the time the car sits there for days on end not being utilised. We're thinking of clubbing together to buy a car that we can share but we're not sure what the insurance implications are etc or should we hire a car and add a couple of the others as additional drivers?
Any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks

When you insure a car in France it's the car that is insured for any driver so perfect for your situation. Getting a car that will stand being left for a long time will be the only trouble, maybe have a charger on hand to get it going. When you buy a French car second hand you have to see the Mayor to transfer ownership! Crazy0

I would suggest getting in touch with a Car Club in this country to find out how it works - how, for example, do you decide who gets the car if two people want to go in opposite directions on the same day, is it always first come first served? - and how they settle disputes, ensure it's maintained, etc.
You may find there's something similar in foreign already. Although I think these things usually operate in cities, which presumably is rather different for you?Signature removed for peace of mind0
