Why is my renewal MORE than a new online quote with the SAME company???

Hi,
AA home insurance - got my renewal, quite competitive after doing a search of other providers using this sites help.
However, I checked the AA online quote and found it to be £40 cheaper for the same level of cover??
Question -
Can I ignore the renewal notice and just take the online quote as if I am a new customer? This will save me £40
BTW, why do companies penalise a customer who has not made a claim with them ?? Doesn't make sense to me

A lot of insurers run at a loss on first year premium as a means to getting new business. If you buy on a discount then you should expect the premium to rise on renewal. A lot of providers do this.
Whether they accept you or not as a new customer is up to the AA. Some will let you get away with it. Others will not and a few weeks later will spot it and come back to you to correct the premium.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I did the same with the post office ie got a new online quote - then I phoned them and said I was going to leave and they decided to honour the online quote so it's good to threaten to leave - they want your business.0
