It's HMRC who will issue any refunds due. However you may have to wait until the end of the tax year before you can ask for a rebate - this is usually because you may return to work.

    When did you actually work?

Also you can only claim back income tax, not national insurance from what I understand.

I'm afraid you will probably have to wait unti April 2009 before applying for a refund.

You could phone HMRC and ask though. If you say you are a student and have no plans to work again before the end of the tax year, they may allow it.

 Oh I hope so!!! I know it won't be much .. but i really need the money :o
  • If your employer incorrectly deducted income tax (which it sounds like) and you don't expect to do any more work in this tax year (i.e. before April 2009) then you can complete form P50 from HMRC's website and send it to HMRC along with your P45 from your employer (which shows the income tax they deducted). HMRC will then issue a refund.

HMRC recently set-up a website dedicating to giving tax advice to students. The relevant section for you is here:

There is nothing to suggest in the OP's post that tax was incorrectly deducted. Why do you think it was?

Yes, it totally matters. You canot claim tax bax from HMRC using a P50 if you intend to work again this tax year.

You will however, have any overpayment rabated to you (providing you hand in your P45) by a new employer.
