Well they were wrong. TV License is ONLY for watching TV as it's broadcast. Don't need it if you're watching something that isn't streamed as it's being broadcast, nor do you need it if you have tv receiving equipment of any kind so long as you're not using it to watch broadcast TV.

Someone was misinformed. :) Only for watching or recording live TV as it's broadcast.

edit: Scaper beat me. That's what I get for opening the new posts in tabs and working my way back to this one. :)

Thing is, would you not need to remove your TV as well? Or, at least, disconnect the aerial. If you still have the TV, you still have a device capable of receiving live TV broadcasts.

The TV license is concerned with "use". You can have as many TVs, PCs and mobile phones which are capable of receiving TV as it is broadcast as you want and not need a license. As soon as you use one of those devices to receive a programme as it is broadcast then you need a license. If you watch the six o'clock news this evening at six o'clock on your TV/PC or mobile then you need a license. If you watch the six o'clock news streamed from a website an hour later then you don't need a license as you are not watching the programme as it is being broadcast.

You don't really have to remove your aerial from your TV as you may be using the aerial to receive digital radio signals via Freeview and not TV signals. However, I think convincing the magistrate of that would be a bit tricky.

fwiw, I have been license free for over four years now. I, genuinely, do not watch broadcast TV but I do have a TV and PC which I use for watching DVDs and streaming (non-live broadcast) media. Saved me a nice few quid. Don't expect it to last as the BBC will, no doubt, be pushing for some sort of broadband license to keep their coffers full.

Makes no difference whether it's a BBC channel or not. The license covers the view of TV broadcasts in general, irrespective of who the broadcaster is.

Ive just got tiscali phone, BB and tv, (got rid of BT phone, and sky TV, was already with tiscali for BB) I really like the catch up, and on demand service as we dont watch that much TV. They have absorbed the Phone line rental, Taking it one step further, they should offer a catch up/OD only service to avoid the tv licence.
I am sick of the Compulsory Tax of the TV licence especially for pensioners!

  • good move ... I ditched sky ages ago and don't miss it one bit.

perhaps you should keep your tv licence /iplayer idea quiet :D .... if everyone got the same idea there would be no one left to pay for the great stuff the BBC produce!!!!
