Rubles Again

My mate recently bought some rubles from the post office. All the notes he was given were 1997... New notes were introduced in Russia in 1998 (because of the devaluation of the ruble). He complained to the post office that the notes were old - they refused to change them for free and have charged him £10 to get them changed. Who is to say that the next notes won't be the same year. I have a feeling that the 1997 notes may still be valid - but, he doesn't want to take the risk...
Anyone got any advice on how to proceed with this? Whether or not it is a problem to take the 1997 notes etc....
Cheers in advance...
Barbara

How can they refuse to sort out the problem if they have supplied something unfit for purpose? Cheeky sods. I'd threaten to sue them.....;)
I can recall an incident in Coventry a year or so ago when someone bought euros from the post office which turned out to be counterfeit. They refused to do anything in that case too. The poor bloke had been arrested in Greece for trying to spend them and locked up.
It turns out the post office had taken them as 'buy back' and not bothered to check them, but still couldn't care less. Best avoided, I think.0 -
