AOL hard selling?

Options
My Mum (79 bless her) hasn't got a computer but somehow a guy from AOL phoned up and managed to take all her details. A letter has arrived welcoming her saying her software will be here shortly.

Can we get a refund if they've taken any money? She's adament that she hasn't bought anything despite giving out cheque details (good God Mum!) This first letter is very vague...mentions a router and another letter to come with price plan and screen name etc..

Think I'll email them a verbal :)

You don't say how long ago this so called "sign up" took place. This is from AOL's ts&cs regarding distant selling. They don't seem to specify a time period though. Possibly 7 days.

    "Distance selling & consumer rights

For non business customers the office of fair trading has regulations which govern distance selling and any private consumers should be aware that you have rights under these regulations. We respect your rights and our terms and conditions of business encompass your rights to cancel any services you request directly from us and will give you the required information, including details of the 'cooling off' period after you have placed an order with us, in accordance with the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000."

I'd be contacting them by 'phone and possibly conventional mail to cancel and also complain about their selling tactics. Hopefully they haven't completed the connection procedure yet or sent the hardware. However, that can be sent back to them. Don't open the packaging to remove the hardware though, leave it intact.
Maybe check her bank account to see if AOL have set up a DD and cancel it, presumably she gave out her bank details from a cheque?
Good luck. That's unacceptable selling in my opinion.

    Hi OAT :)
The ''sign up took place on Fri. 13th. She phoned up Sunday to say she didn't want AOL. They said they would cancel.

The connection seems to have taken place on Sunday  two days after sign up. I cannot connect to my old ISP (Madasafish)on my bedroom computer "Invalid username or password". I cant even log in to my account at the madasafish website via library computer.

I've emailed madasafish to see if they can reverse what AOL have done.

Thanks for helping OAT, much appreciated :)
