Swinton Home Insurance cancellation charge

  • I'm experiencing exactly the same situation with the AA although will possibly start a new thread on this one, but just quickly I've already paid over half my premium and had to cancel my insurance and they want a £50 cancellation fee along with a £30 balance but don't want to hijack this thread!

Marko2002 I think your case is slightly different as you have cancelled mid term and would have had to pay their cancellation fee as its in the terms and conditions you accepted (Check it spells out the charges they have charged you).

The issue with the OP is it sounds like it would have been reasonable for Swintons to tell the OP to just let their policy lapse at renewal and then they would not have ended up owing Swintons money
  • I'm having a wee problem similar to the above with Swinton.
I recently sold my house and moved into a rented accommodation. I informed Swinton of this and the nice bloke at the branch said he would contact me later to complete the quote on my new contents only policy. He never got back to me (and I'm still without insurance!). A few weeks later I get a letter from Swinton informing me that, due to my cancelling my policy, I now owe them £50.
It was never my intention to cancel the policy, but to amend to the new address and have contents only. I can live with the fact that this constitutes 'cancellation', but as a customer looking to continue with a service, I would have thought that the reasonable thing to do would be to at least contact me first and then perhaps add a small admin fee to the value of my next policy.

I rang their 'Customer Help Line' who were of no help whatsoever, as they stated that I cancelled the policy.

Needless to say I have recently received a letter fom a collection agency for the £50, which is slightly ironic, as the account was just about square - I didn't owe and they didn't owe.......I give up with these people.

Gash can you clarify for us.

Did you instruct Swintons to cancel the policy and / or did you cancel your direct debit policy?

Did you have a combined Building and Contents Policy or seperate Building and Contents Policies?
