Debenhams gift vouchers

Quite alot of the gift card's these days can be registered online with the relevant shop in case they are lost, then they are cancelled and replaced.

My friend retired from her work place last year.

Her work colleagues presented her with £500 worth of debenhams gift vouchers, very nice.

However, she has noticed the small print on the vouchers. It states that the vouchers must be spent within 2 years of purchase.

Can they do this?
I would have thought that as the vouchers were bought in cash they would have to be treated as cash.

Any comments on this. (Apart from the obvious, I wouldn't have a problem spending £500 quid)!!

Just thought I would add this update.
My friend went into debenhams to spend some of her gift vouchers.
She spent £100 on a George Foreman grill and a new iron.
They charged her 10p for two plastic carriers to take them home in!!.
Now I can understand taking our own bags to the supermarket but surely not when purchasing large items from a store.
