    what happens exactly?

if it knows there are files on it can you explore the DVD but not play the files? if so it's possible you haven't got media player assigned to play wmv files.

For some strange reason some laptop drives seem to take a lot longer to read dvd's than most desktops, I've also see discs completely unrecognised in some drives, usually burned on a HP writer. It could be something as basic as the make of the dvd rom/writer or the make of disc it was burned on why it shows but cannot be read.

it is enabled to play wmv files so as you said it could be the dvd disk looks like its going back to the seller
    many thanks

to scheming_gypsy when the disk is put in to the laptop it does not read and no files are shown in my computer for that disk. on a dvd player it shows there are folders but i can't play them as it is unable to play wmv files.

in that case like mentioned it's probably the disk / drive compatibility. drive might only be able to play -r's.
