you will require a gps reciever, wired or bluetooth(if your pda has bluetooth) i have wired as it while its in the car it charges my pda while also suppling power to the reciever.
You will also need software, like TomTom navigator (Maps)
both can be obtained from ebay, you may also need to buy a new memory card to as tomtom takes a min of 256Mb depending on the version you use. ( ihave tomtom3 and it fits on a 128mb card.

thanks flang, How can I tell if it is bluetooth enabled?, I am worried that i'll waste money on buying something thats not suitable.

here are the details of the handheld I bought if anyone can assist

Compaq's iPAQ Pocket PC combines a 206 MHz Intel StrongARM processor, new hardware, and a sleek industrial design that fits in your hand to create a powerful and stylish PDA you can take anywhere. It offers 32 MB RAM and 16 MB ROM--enough memory to hold a robust package of applications while leaving you a lot of room for your own applications.

The color TFT screen produces 4,086 colors, and you can view the screen from many angles and in a variety of lighting situations. The Compaq iPAQ wraps the power of a Microsoft Windows operating system in a new interface designed for ease of use in a portable format. Even if you've never used a computer or digital organizer, learning to use the Compaq iPAQ is easy.

Other highlights of the Compaq iPAQ include a microphone and a speaker as well as an audio-in jack. It features an infrared port for wireless data transfer. The Compaq iPAQ uses five buttons plus a five-way joystick. The iPAQ connects to either USB or serial ports. The iPAQ allows you to input data in your own handwriting, by soft keyboard, by voice recorder, or through inking. Both audible and visual alarms alert you when you have a scheduled event.

What sets this Pocket PC apart from similar devices on the market is its sleeve-like expansion-pack system. The expansion-pack system allows you add functionality to suit your particular needs. Expansion-pack options currently include a CompactFlash pack, the ability to attach a CompactFlash card slot to your iPAQ, an executive leather and PC Card expansion pack, and a water-resistant sports pack. In the future, Compaq plans to release a global positioning system pack, so you can turn your iPAQ pocket PC into a GPS unit.

The Compaq iPAQ is sporty and small. At 5.11 by 3.28 by 0.62 inches and 6 ounces, it fits in your hand or slides into your pocket with ease. Don't let the size fool you into thinking you don't get many applications with your iPAQ.

You receive a great deal of Microsoft software, such as Pocket versions of Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, and Money. Compaq also has built-in utilities so that frequent actions--such as switching between tasks, adjusting volume, or changing backlighting--are only a click away.

Your pda is not bluetooth therefore you would need to look for either a wired gps unit which will work with it, something like this http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/leadtek9531.php

One of the other things you will need is a holder for the car, I bought mine from ebay for about £7.00 including postage.

You can buy SD/MMC Bluetooth units which will fit into the SD/MMC slot on the PDA, however, I'm unsure if they will work on your particular model.

    Thanks Roger.....next question for anyone

is the GPS that I have pasted in below suitable for the PDA I have bought (details of which are in my previous posting)

In a nutshell: A very high quality GPS receiver which will give you a signal quickly from a cold start and a high number of satellites to enable you to keep an accurate position. The item is supplied with a car charger which will charge both the receiver and your PDA as well as passing the signal to your PDA Used for 2 weeks while on Holiday in the USA. (Fantastic) Technical information High sensitivity for very weak signal acquisitions and tracking Integrated powerful CPU, base band and RF front-end hardware in a SOC (System On Chip) design reduces the space and power consumption Advanced IC technology allows total receiver cost saving Allows the receiver to track up to 12 channel satellites Fast TTFF for cold start, warm start and hot start High performance firmware drives an excellent positioning speed Serial communication channel with user selectable baud rates allows maximum interface capability and flexibility Supports backup power to sustain internal clock Suitable for notebook, PC, PDA and others Optional USB cable, PDA connector Accuracy: Position: 5m without SA Velocity: 0.1m/second without SA Time: +1u seccond Acquisition: Cold start: 50 seconds (average) Warm start: 35 seconds (average) Hot start: 2 seconds (minimum) Sensitivity: Acquisition: -139dBm Tracking: -152dBm Dynamics: Altitude: maximum 18,000m Velocity: maximum 500m/second Acceleration: maximum +/-4g Navigation update rate: once per second Serial I/O: series RS-232 signal 4.8K (optional 9.6K) NMEA 0183: GGA, GSV, GSA, RMC, (optional VTG, GLL) Coordinate datum: WGS 84 Power supply: 5 to 9VDC Power consumption: typical (tracking): 120mW Sleep mode power saving: yes (automatic) RTC support: yes Waterproof: yes System performance: tracks up to 12 satellites L1, C/A code Operating temperature: -40 to 85 degrees Celsius Storage temperature: -55 to 100 degrees Celsius Humidity: 5 to 95 percent

    Ummm....no idea.

The thing is, you want the gps unit to pair with your pda. So basically what you really need is a unit which has either the fitting which plugs into the base of your pda or one with a PS2 type socket (like the end of a mouse cable) which then fits onto a extention cable to fit to the base of your pda.

I assume what you will need is something like this

or even an all in one holder and gps unit
