Hi folks, thanks for the advice. I have re-read the ebay advert and, yep, it was high density :(

Can any of you please advise whether this ram would be ok? Can't afford to keep buying new memory - would be cheaper to just get a new computer!

It looks OK but, as it's Ebay, I'd email the seller. Let them confirm and clarify the returns policy if it's faulty or not compatible.

What about the memory you recently bought - have you contacted the Seller? From your description, that memory looked right too. So if it's faulty, you ought to get a refund.

The ram itself should be fine, but unfortunately it's High Density, an earlier poster pointed out it's Low Density I need (such as in the link I posted). The ram I've bought will probably just be listed for sale as the returns policy for the vendor is financially prohibitive!

The reason for looking on Ebay is that I have a few quid stashed in Paypal ;)

I think MISCO will take paypal, and their technical department is excellent at recommending the right product - their prices aren't too bad, and the delivery is fast.

Quite a few retailers accept Paypal, not just eBay.;)

    Evening techie types!

I'm trying to upgrade the memory in the missus' desktop which is a Dell Dimension 3000 series. It currently has 512Mb of PC2700, 333MHz ram in 2 x 256Mb sticks. I did the usual scan on Crucial and then bought 2 x 1Gb sticks of PC3200, 400MHz ram from a trusted Powerseller on Ebay. I fited them this afternoon but the computer doesn't start up, it makes 4 or five fairly long beeps and then doesn't do anything else.

I'm 100% sure the memory is compatible and I have tried various configurations with 1 stick then 2 sticks etc but to no avail.

    Any ideas?

Yeah. You went to a decent site that has guaranteed 100% compatible memory and lifetime guarantee with a no quibble refund policy then instead of buying it there, you went off to Ebay and bought cheap generic rubbish that's pretty much guaranteed not to work and that you'll have all hell on getting a refund. So that £5 you think you've saved is going to cost you whatever you paid on Ebay.

You've just had a lesson and an expensive one. There's a reason why there are 100's of posts recommending using Crucial to get memory for your PC - because it works EVERY TIME.

So off you go back to Crucial, rerun the memory selector and order the RAM it saiys FROM THEM. But then again, you'll probably potter off to the other sites mentioned just because they accept paypal and waste some more money. Look forward to seeing the "I bought some RAM for my Dell Dimension and it doesn't work AGAIN" thread later on this week.

Would have been cheaper just to get it from Crucial in the first place. Just how much more than Crucials price is this going to end up costing you once you finally get some that works?

Harshly put, Conor - but the underlying message is spot on ;)

I've only ever bought memory from Crucial and never had a problem in five or six purchases
