    Something to bear in mind:

    Both Norton and McAfee have had to release seperate uninstall utilities, because their software is so badly written, it usually won't uninstall properly using the Add & Remove programs option.

    Personally, I use Avast - it's no hassle at all, but the default skin is crap - MacLoverOSX makes it look like a proper program though :-}

    The *best* free alternative for detection is Avira (free-av.com) but it's a little *too* paranoid for me - its' detection rate is right up there with Kaspersky, and may even be slightly better.

    I don't tend to recommend AVG to anyone - it may have improved in the last 12-18 months, but every machine I ever got called to prior to that timeframe to remove spyware - and had AVG installed - had at least two live / active viruses in memory.

    Norton internet security 2008 is only £19.99

    I wouldn't use Norton if they gave me £19.99 to use it.

    AVG Free or Avast are both better and free

    Definitely true. Dont waste money on norton, i actually have uninstalled norton in favour of AVG. Save your cash! Most reviews in mags (PcPro PcZone etc always show norton doing suprisingly badly. I know for a fact AntiVir actually found almost a THIRD more viruses than norton in a test suite. And AntiVir is free!)

    I did the same, Norton'sit came free with my new comp and I ditched it for AVG.

    Another vote for "Avast Home (Free)" edition.

    I always used to be a Norton person, regularly buying updates each year, but for the past year I changed to the free tools available, and haven't looked back. I won't be touching Norton again.
  • If you really want to install Norton you can get a completely free 6 month trial of Norton AntiVirus 2008 wth Antispyware by going out and buying the August edition of Computer Shopper (it's on the cover DVD for free). My friend used to use Norton and it drove him nuts because he had problems getting decent customer service and cancelling an automatic subscription and problems uninstalling the software.

    However, Kaspersky Internet Security 7 is a complete package and it's about the best you can get and I bought an OEM CD (without having to buy any hardware) a few months back for £9 odd - see google shopping - many retailers. I used to use AVG though and had no problems, but when it comes to security knowing you have one of the best performing applications just gives pece of mind.

    I wouldn't touch Norton with a barge pole - it slows your computer down costs money and is completely un-user friendly.

    Just get AVG free. It's quick and does the same job for free. Then get Zone Alarm as well, and you'll be fully protected. For free.

    Norton is fine if you don't mind having a security suite which swallows up all your memory and most of your processing power.
    I now use AVG FREE and CCleaner and AdAware, all of which cost me NIL.
