Parking fine

Options
Just received a penalty notice - £50 - for not paying a parking ticket which was supposedly given to me on 3 May.

This is the first I've known about any parking ticket - there was no ticket on my windscreen on the day in question. If I appeal how likely is it do you think that I will get a reduced fine? I'm not disputing the fact that I was parked at this particular time (they extended the payable hours from 6pm to 8pm and I didn't notice:o ) but if I didn't know about it then I couldn't pay it could I?

Phone up and tell them. Same thing happened to my brother last year. Got a letter through post (think for £60) a month after the date he supposedly got the ticket. Person he phoned was quite rude and highly cynical of my brother (but I was with him at the time so I know for a fact there was no ticket on car when my brother got back to it). But they did agree to take what he said on face value "just this once" and let him pay the reduced amount.

Is this a parking fine - ie an FPN from the police or a PCN from the council? Or is it an unenforceable invoice from a private parking company?

The forums at https://www.pepipoo.com will offer some very helpful advice if it's the former.

If it's the latter, pepipoo will tell you all you need to know about the private parking scam. Basically, they are NOT fines. And they are entirely unenforceable. They are invoices for penalties based on purported a contract between the driver and landowner. However, penalties are not allowed under contract law. In any event, they have no means of finding the driver - only the registered keeper, who is under no obligation to either pay or divulge the driver's details.

Ah, I see it was a P&D car park (so probably council, yes?). Even so, you MUST get on to pepipoo to check out the validity of the notice you have received. If it's not worded correctly, it's not valid.

If it was a private P&D car park, then I guess you owe them the cost of parking there - nothing more.
