watch bought from argos - sale of goods act?

My partner bought a watch in May 2007, so just over a year ago from argos. It is not exclusive to argos . it was not bought in the sale and we still have the reciet.
He has done nothing to the watch but wear it most like just like anyone else would do.
problem is now the rubber like strap has broken and he can no longer wear it. it costed about £20 new and I think it is still at the same price.
We went into argos to see what they could do. I did mention to him about the sale of goods act where you get 5 years (Scotland) but I know none of the details to do with this.
Bascially they have said what I expected that it ifs over a year old then there's nothing they can do.
I'm sure that under the sale of goods act they have to fix it for us or give us a new one.
My partner did mention the sale of goods act, but the manager just looked at us as if he had never heard of it before.
This was a couple of days ago.
If we get equiped with the knowledge and written facts then we will go back in again.
Are we right in thinking that this is covered under the sale of goods act?
The watch wasn't broken when we bought it but he has done nothnig but just wear it like anyone would most days for the past 13 months?

Don't have to replace it as it would be classed as wear and tear in my opinion.

Buy a new watch strap?
I wouldn't expect a £20 watch to last much more than a year, unless you have a specific manufacturers guarantee.Decluttering, 20 mins / day Jan 2024 2/20 -
I'm with oystercatcher here - SOG is all about the goods performing to a "reasonable" standard - and I have to agree that it's bordering on unreasonable to expect the *strap* of a £20 watch to last more than a year, even with day-to-day use.
Not sure how much joy you'll get with this, but keep us informed anyway.
(if you just kick up enough fuss, the manager might get bored and give you a replacement just to shut you up, I suppose

As someone has said, just buy a new watch strap."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Replace the broken strap with some string - I'm sure no one will notice.0

For that type of watch why not just use sellotape to fix the strap?
I could understand someone expecting a £200 watch to last more than a year, but some cheap Chinese £20 watch, a years use from a piece of plastic is pretty reasonable.====0 -
OP if you have any old knickers that you are thinking of throwing out, you could remove the elastic and use that as the strap.0

When I buy a watch with a rubber strap I expect it to wear out as it goes hard and cracks if you use it all the time. I usually replace the watch at this point as it's cheaper ( not very money saving I know). This year I've gone for a metal strap.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

If memory serves me, any guarantee does not usually include straps and batteries so the store manager was probably correct. And I agree with others, I would not expect the strap on this level of watch to last more than a year or so.
