Spreadsheet for comparing top3
I'm so confused with energy comparisons. I nearly swapped today from eon energy online saver 5, as moneysupermarket told me npower's signonline11 and British gas clickenergy5 were £100 cheaper per year. I phoned eon and chatted through options, they said I was on the cheapest for my usage and to check the actual prices! This I have done, and tried to compile into a spreadsheet. It's been hard, and I'm sure I've made mistakes, which I'd love someone to point out. Since then I’ve received info from Eon of their new prices (and a sneaky move in tier levels).
What made it so hard to compare was the different tiers/bands... e.g. (prior to recent charge increases) for electricity usage Eon charge me 17p for the first 900kwh and then 9p, but bgas have their first tier up to 500kwh (21p) and 7p after that etc.
Same with gas, npower go up to 4572kwh and bgas's first tier is up to 2680. It's so hard to compare like for like, which is why comparison websites should do this for you.
I think this spreadsheet will help me get a clearer picture, of what comparison websites are doing behind the scenes, before I actually ever move supplier in the future. If anyone wants to have a look, send me a pm with your email address and I'll try and send - no promises! I'm a busy dad!
For those who just want to now the numbers: for our annual electric use of 4380kwh and gas of 18250kwh gives me eon=£957, npower=£846, bgas=£855
Interestingly, pre discounts, eon was terribly expensive for Electricity (£150 more), whereas gas prices were similar (only £30/40 more).
I’ve compared this to moneysupermarket and they agree with my values within a few pounds, so I think it’s roughly correct.
As soon as suppliers change discounts, this spreadsheet will need changing, but at least it’s easy to alter annual use (in kwh) and first band/second band prices when they are announced.
Hope it helps someone (I think I’m just nerdy!)
P.S. I'm quite new to this utility swapping, and not used this board before, so hope this hasn't already been done!
