WC's and washbasins

Can any one please help? My family and I live in rented accommodation. The bathroom is upstairs (bath, washbasin, shower over bath) and the toilet is downstairs but has no hand washing facilities. I have asked about a wash basin, they say the loo is too small (not in my opinion,54''x32'')and they can't change the door to open outwards instead of inwards? North Lincs Homes, (our landlord) is planning a programme of works to our home which will include replacing the bath, washbasin, shower and toilet but still will not fit a sink in the loo. Surely this can't be right.

Might be worth asking a neighbour or someone with a simular property to see if they have managed to get one in.
If they are going to the trouble of getting tradesmen around to complete the works you have described then logistically it wouldnt be that much more time consuming to fit a basin.
If the bathroom door opened outward would it impede/conflict with another door ?
Because ive seen this on new builds a few times and after a week in the new house ive sent aftercare teams round because one door has hit another and been ripped of the hinges.
Maybe as they say they physically cant get one in ?
Or could be a water hot water supply issue.
Im sure i will be corrected if im wrong but i doubt there is any regulation/legislation regarding there having to be a washbasin in a 2nd wc.
Id still try and pursue them for a more definative answer though.

I thought toilets had to have a basin for washing.. building regs.
Ask if they can fit a bi-fold door - gives you more usable space. I've got the worlds smallest bathroom and a bi-fold door has been a godsend.0 -
I think your right sally im just skimming through the part g of the regs now and will post up what is releveant.
I did say i was sure i would be corrected ;p
Wenhazed it may be that it was built before these regs came into inforcement is your home quite new ?
Do you know when it was built ?0 -

I've always understood it that you need a wash hand basin in a toilet except where the loo is adjacent to the bathroom or other facility containing a wash hand basin (that doesn't include a kitchen). Seem to be confirmed by swake. Remind them of their obligations. If they don't play ball, speak with the Environmental Health Dept at your Local Council and they will take this up.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0
