Looking for a special character, how to do the 2 as in h2O (it drops below the line)

Have found the one for putting above the line

ALT 253 using the number keypad

but can't find a code for the one that drops below

Anybody have a clue?

    Are you using word?

If you are you can highlight the character, right click it, Font, then click Subscript.

You didn't say what program you were using, but in the character set accessed by Alt+Numeric Keypad Characters there is no subscript 2, just superscript ° (or degree: Alt+248 or Alt+167, I never know which), ¹ (Alt+251) , ² (Alt+253) and ³ (Alt+252).

If you were in Word, you would simply type the 2 then highlight it, and click on Format -> Font and then tick the Effects Subscript box.

Because there isn't an extended ASCII code for subscript 2.

Or you can use Ctrl + = to toggle between subscript and normal (similar to Ctrl + B for bold)

There are special characters defined for subscripted characters, but you need to go beyond ASCII and into the Unicode standard.

The Unicode character for subscript 2 is U+2082 (₂). The simplest way to enter this is to use Character map or Insert Symbol in Word. The main issue is that most of the standard Windows fonts do not contain subscript characters. You need to use something like MS Gothic or Lucida Sans Unicode (Arial Unicode would probably work as well, although I don't have that installed here).

Of course, as other posters have mentioned if you are using Word or something similar you can make any character subscript via the Font dialog box.
