    It depends on your software.

A normal photo from a digital camera is about 1200x1600 pixels, so use this as a guide. The most important thing is the file size. Some ISPs do not like emails over 5MB (also they might to take a while to download if your friend is on dial-up).

If your scanner will scan to JPEG then you can choose varying levels of quality to bring the size down, or progs like Paint Shop Pro can do this for you.

you might want to download irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) it's free and a very lightweight (ie small) graphics manipulation program. if you do then you could do the following:

scan the pictures in using your scanner software at any resolution / filetype then use irfanview to resize the images - it offers a variety of choices or you can input your own dimensions. you can then review the newly sized image and decide if it has enough quality for your liking. you can then save the file as any graphical file type you like - either choosing jpeg for compatibility or something like tif or png for smaller file size.

    or

use the built in option within irfanview (file -> acquire or select twain source) and then scan directly into irfanview where you can adjust the image as above.

depending on your internet connection and that of your friend you may want to send small groups of files (say a megabyte's worth at a time) to prevent both time consuming sending and receiving and also the chance that the email may be blocked due to size and / or refused because their mailbox is full. (obviously if you both have broadband then fill your boots!)

alternatively if your isp provided you with some free web space you could upload the pictures to that and let the friend (and others) download the pictures they want as and when they want.
