Hi there, I have a newish pc which has vista on it.
Last night it was running slow, a message error came through about updates (I wasnt at the pc it was daughter) so dont know exactly what.
Anyways it did windows updates and today seems as though its back to normal speed.
I ran defender, is that all I need or do I get something like spybot ?

defender's detection rates aren't the best - best get something like spyware doctor as well, which runs real-time protection. Spybot only detects on scanning.
You can get the free version of spyware doctor (called starter edition) from majorgeeks.com

Spyware doctor is an excellent remover of spyware, and is well worth the investment for the full version. I have the 5.5 version and have it set to scan on start up and realtime scanning. Ok, the scanning precess slows my machine down a slightly until its completed the scan on startup, However you wouldn't believe the amount of spy ware that gets into your system without you even knowing it. I also have Defender and most other removers, but none of them come close in finding as much as spyware doctor does - and in realtime.

I would personally recommend Avast Anti Virus as it's free, excellent and works in real time protection.

Also Ad Aware is a good choice for spyware/adware

Filewall - Zonealarm and windows inbuilt firewall suit me just fine

Are you saying that you use two firewalls at the same time?

Thought Zonealarm automatically turns the OS firewall off ?
