Hi ... am taking you at your word, namely "any help welcomed", ok.
Have a read at this link - if nothing else , it will show that the answer to your question is the Holy Grail for many, and how seriously they take it - and in many cases pay for it:

Good luck with your site!If many little people, in many little places, do many little things,
they can change the face of the world.

Two different things there. Getting listed at all isn't too hard, getting to the top of the rankings is worth a fortune.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Search_engine_optimization is a start.
Some search engines let you register your site, some rely on web-bots and spiders to find your site.
How many sites your site links to and from is taken into account, how many times a certain key word is mentioned can be important too. Different engines use different methods of ranking.
Lot harder now to get up the rankings. I did try it a good few years ago when all you had to do was have the key word (ie the word that people would enter in the search engine ) mentioned dozens of times, sometimes in the same colour text as the background so it's invisible to the eye but not to the search engine. Not that easy now.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -
Just picking up on this crucial "key word" aspect - at the foot of the link I gave above, they refer back to the AOL leak of info in 2006.
Know what the most frequently searched key word turned out to be, well ahead of entertainment, or even !!!!!!?
It was "other" - now if only we had known, coulda made a fortune, lol!If many little people, in many little places, do many little things,
they can change the face of the world.

Yes but people then were actually looking at !!!!!!, not for a shopping website0

As I think someone has already implied, its no good your site coming up when the person is searching for something else!0

If your selling a "Branded product" then try speaking with manufacturers. Most larger manufactures would have an ecommerce support team, if you chat with the team superviser and get the companies approval they should allow you to put their logo within your site and dont forget to mention their name in your keywords which will create a connection between your site and theirs. Goodluck in your site0

Getting a link to your own website from a bigger (more popular) website helps your google ranking.0

First thing you need to do is sign up for a google account (which is free) here Once set up go to Webmaster tools and read all the information there, which is written in uninteligible american techneze!
Two - Links, the more links you have into your site the higher Google will rate you. Go to www.dmoz.org the Open Directory project, which Google uses as it's own Directory. Yahoo is worth registering with and (paying) for a listing in their directory - and then it is ball aching hard work getting links.
Good Luck, it takes time, time, time, money and patience. The other thing you need to be aware of is that Google (allegedly) has a 'sandbox' where new sites are dumped for 9 months before they will list you.
You also have to bear in mind that there are over 5 BILLION sites currently indexed by Google, all struggling to be top for their search terms.
Finally, Google powers over 70% of UK searches, so you need to be listed there, but it has its own rules - which it will never disclose to you, it changes them on a regular basis so you will spend your life trying to please a secretive monster which is doing its best to dump you!0 -
I don't go along with the "google sandbox" theory. I get my sites listed within two weeks simply by submitting them and getting a few backlinks.0
